Teaching Kids About Finances

I recently watched a news feature on the Today Show about mothers teaching their kids to be budget conscious. It brought back memories for me with my dad discussing the evils of gambling and credit card debt. My dad meant well, but he never explained to me why getting a credit card before I was ready was a bad thing. He just said that it was. Unfortunately, I had to learn the hard way and accumulated a good amount of debt by the time I was 22.

Nowadays, experts are encouraging parents to start their children early on finance education. Here are some tips to get started:

  • Give them an allowance, and teach them how to budget and save their money.
  • Open a checking account for kids at a bank. Most banks have children accounts.
  • Have younger children start saving money in a piggy bank.
  • Be honest about what you spend, what you can and what you cannot buy.
  • Teach age-appropriate money management skills.

There are many resources including internet based publications that have games, and other types of educational tools for kids.

Having this knowledge will be able to empower children with the skills they need to succeed as financially responsible adults. This is something that my niece learned from my sister Josie. She is now in her mid-20s and has AAA credit, something that many of her peers cannot relate to.

Red Grape Seeds to Treat Alzheimer’s Disease

You may have heard in on the news, the many benefits that red wine provides. One of those benefits is that it may help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. Recently, Mt.Sinai Researchers have discovered that polyphenolics derived from red grape seeds may help prevent or treat Alzheimer’s Disease. Basically, the study looked into the possibility of developing “wine mimetic pills” that would replace the one glass-a-day recommendation made by experts.

“Meganatural AZ grape seed extracts significantly reduced Alzheimer’s disease – type cognitive deterioration in the Alzheimer’ disease mice through mechanisms that prevents the formation of a more complex form of a molecule known as amyloid in the brain” according to Dr. Pansinetti, one of the researchers.

Dr. Pansinetti goes on to say that amyloid is present in everyone’s brain. However, when it comes together in a more complex structure, the brain functions less efficiently, such as the effect of Alzheimer’s. The ability of Meganatural AZ compounds’ ability to stop the growth of complex amyloid structures suggests a possibility of preventing memory loss in people who have not yet developed Alzheimer’s Disease.

Quill and Paper Pictures, Images and Photos

According to an article by The Times Beacon Record Online, Rep. Steve Israel,a congressman from NY (Dix Hills), wants to help caregivers with the passage of 2 new bills:

  • 1st bill: Boosts funding from $166 million to $250 million to the National Family Caregiver Support Program. They provide financial aid, training and support to caregivers thorughout the nation. Within this bill is a $10 million campaign for long-term care information.
  • 2nd bill: This would extend the tax benefits for dependent-care income tax credit. This would include caregivers whose parents live in places outside of the caregiver’s home.

Hopefully this legislation will pass through with flying colors, as we all know the daunting task of caring for parents, especially those with chronic illnesses is especially overwhelming.

13 other bills have been introduced such as Boyda’s Bill which you can read further.
