Januvia to help lower blood sugar levels in Type 2 Diabetes

My mom is on Metformin right now. That is the drug of choice that her doctor prescribed. She has Type 2 Diabetes and she has been stable with the use of that particular drug. Now there is another drug on the market — Januvia (Jah- new-vee-uh)

What is it?

Used with diet and exercise, Januvia can lower blood sugar levels in adults with Type  2 Diabetes.

Benefits

  • Lowers blood sugar between meals
  • Helps improve the levels of insulin after each meal
  • Decreases the amount of sugar produced by the body – but will not work when sugar is too low

Who should NOT take it?

  • Anyone under 18  – It has not been tested on children
  • People with Type 1 diabetes
  • People with increased ketones in the blood or urine

Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or if you are allergic or pregnant.

Side Effects

  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Stuffy, runny nose or sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Some stomach discomfort

Dosing Instructions

  • Follow doctor’s instruction exactly
  • Take once a day by mouth
  • Take with or without food
  • If you miss a dose, make sure to take one as soon as possible
  • Do not take two tablets together
