About Us

Hello I’m Rose,

Rose Broyles, Chief Editor, Caring For Mom and Dad

Rose Broyles, Chief Editor

I am the Chief Editor for Caring For Mom and Dad, a website dedicated to caregivers by caregivers.

My experience in elder care stemmed from when our dad suffered from a mild stroke in the year 2000. It was a life changing experience for me, not only because I witnessed it, but also because I had to quickly “grow up”. I had to learn how to deal with doctors, learn about his specific medical condition and how to properly care for him. I went from knowing nothing to knowing a little about giving injections, taking blood pressure, broadening my medication knowledge and being a proactive party on behalf of both of my parents’ health. Then, our mom was diagnosed 5 years ago with Alzheimer’s, it was one of the most devastating points in our lives. At the same time, we (my sister and I)have learned a great deal about the disease and it’s brought us closer to each other and to our parents. We still struggle day in and day out with them, planning ahead trying to cope with the resources we do have.

Other tidbits

My medical background per se is from personal experience and hours of extensive research with my Journalism background and personal experience with our parents. I’m a “research freak” and spend many hours a day reading about all kinds of topics and issues.  I also learn a lot from my husband who works in Radiology and even from my niece who was a pre-med major and has a degree in Molecular , Cell & Developmental Biology. Yes, I’m surrounded by “geeks”. :)   But you would be surprised that just because people are in the medical field doesn’t mean that they know much about diseases such as Alzheimer’s unless they themselves have direct experience with it.  I’m just an informed patient advocate.

In addition, I  have a background in Graphic Design, Web Design and Technical Writing. I have a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism and an M.S. in Software Engineering. I was born and raised in Northern and Southern California, with a brief stint in Washington state where I spent my first two years in college. For the most part, I’m a California girl!  Beaches, NFL Football and relaxation are my favorite things.

I am in the younger category of the “Sandwich Generation”. I am in my  30s as opposed to being in my 40s, 50s and 60s like my brothers and sisters. My experiences are different as are my needs. I have a little girl whom I adore with my heart and soul. My husband is my rock and support and I’m truly grateful to have someone so understanding.
