Hot Cars, Hyperthermia and the Elderly

You’ve heard the news stories about children being left in hot cars. Tragically, many of these children die from hyperthermia. But children are not the only ones vulnerable to the harsh heat that can quickly rise in a car. The elderly, disabled and PETS are susceptible to heat stroke. This summer, a couple both suffering from Dementia were left in a vehicle by their own son.

More reports of elderly deaths due to hyperthermia are attributed to being in a home with no ventilation or air conditioning. However, it is important to keep in mind that the elderly are just as vulnerable as a toddler, especially if they have a brain impairment. It is never good to leave them unattended in a vehicle, even if it is for just a few minutes.
