After thoroughly assessing your parents’ situation ( You can download your free guide to Senior Housing when you sign up for our monthly newsletter to help you make that decision), how do you go about actually moving their things if you decide that they must move away from home?
Here are some useful tips for moving your parents:
I think that you have to put your parents’ feelings in your planning efforts. You have to think about how drastic this change will be for them especially if they have been in their home for years. I know that when we moved our parents, it was out of a medical necessity. A two-story home for them was a safety issue. It wasn’t that hard to convince them to move.
However your parents may not necessarily have the same urgency. Perhaps they are just in a big home that is too hard to maintain. How do you convince them when there is a deep attachment? All of those things you should get settled before you actually start planning the move.
Some things to consider:
1. Help your parents first go through their valuables and decide if they want to put those in storage or keep with them wherever they are going to be moving to.
2. If there are items that they need for income, you may want to consider an estate sale or if you just want to clear out their home so that they can move into their new place without the clutter.
3. Use a professional mover.
4. The number one goal is the make the move as easy and stress-free as possible. So use all the help you need so that you can focus on keeping your parents calm and worry-free.
