My mom is on Metformin right now. That is the drug of choice that her doctor prescribed. She has Type 2 Diabetes and she has been stable with the use of that particular drug. Now there is another drug on the market — Januvia (Jah- new-vee-uh)
What is it?
Used with diet and exercise, Januvia can lower blood sugar levels in adults with Type 2 Diabetes.
Benefits
- Lowers blood sugar between meals
- Helps improve the levels of insulin after each meal
- Decreases the amount of sugar produced by the body – but will not work when sugar is too low
Who should NOT take it?
- Anyone under 18 – It has not been tested on children
- People with Type 1 diabetes
- People with increased ketones in the blood or urine
Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or if you are allergic or pregnant.
Side Effects
- Upper respiratory infection
- Stuffy, runny nose or sore throat
- Headaches
- Some stomach discomfort
Dosing Instructions
- Follow doctor’s instruction exactly
- Take once a day by mouth
- Take with or without food
- If you miss a dose, make sure to take one as soon as possible
- Do not take two tablets together
