S.D. researchers are hopeful about new Alzheimer’s drug

A team of Alzheimer’s disease researchers led by scientists in San Diego offered a new glimmer of hope on Wednesday amid a string of setbacks in the long battle to treat the debilitating and deadly condition.

A newly discovered compound, named NGP555, blocked the accumulation of beta amyloid — a toxic protein plaque — in the brains of mice, the researchers reported Wednesday in the medical journal Neuron.

Beta amyloid has emerged as the main suspect for causing Alzheimer’s, and NGP555 appears to stop the spread of the sticky material without causing troublesome side effects that have surfaced with other experimental treatments.
