In the world of high-tech that we live in today, many older adults are getting on board to find better ways to interact with others, learn about the world around them, and stay engaged. Social networking tools like Facebook, as well as communication tools like Skype, are becoming more popular among the retirees in the world today. There are still many seniors who don’t utilize technology, however. The initial step of getting them interested in what technology has to offer is the hardest part. If people can see all the benefits of technology and how it can help them or give them something to appreciate, they are much more likely to take advantage of it.

Of course, finding the means to showcase all of the perks of today’s tech gadgets and internet technology is not always easy. Some adults are easier to convince than others, which is why the technology world is still very underappreciated among the 65+ audience. Microsoft launched a program in New York City in 2010 to showcase assistive technology for older adults, outfitting them with top-of-the-line computer systems and technology tools to help with various aspects of their lives. The main goal, of course, is giving people that chance to feel connected once again to a community that they might have begun to feel a bit detached from.

There are so many advantages to today’s technology and with a lot of companies focused on making senior-friendly resources, it’s something that everyone needs to take advantage of. The different areas of focus include everything from computers to cell phones and even smart phones, e-readers, and more. Within the world of technology, adults over the age of 65 can find plenty of different tools and resources that can improve their lives, but taking advantage of them is a completely different story. There are a lot more people who are taking advantage of technology today than ever before, but there are still so many who don’t realize the potential that it has to benefit their lives.

In a time when staying connected is easier than ever, the main issue of the 65+ audience is finally being addressed to create effective solutions that give everyone a chance to get more out of their daily lives. The best technology tools for seniors include things like:

Wireless Phones and Smartphones

This technology allows people to go anywhere and do anything, without the worry of not having access to other people if they need it. Active adults who want to get out and do more without the risk of being alone in the wrong place at the wrong time can always benefit from having a cell phone or a smartphone. This is one of the forms of evolving technology that a lot of seniors do take advantage of, with more than 65% of today’s seniors having and using mobile phones. That number is expected to increase in the coming years as landlines become increasingly obsolete and the variety of wireless options specifically marketed toward the 65+ audience expand.

One of the biggest draws of the mobile phone market is that carriers are working to create plans especially for this audience. They know that these users have very different needs than younger audiences, which is why they create cheap, yet affordable solutions that are designed with the unique needs of seniors in mind.

Social Networking

Social networking sites like Facebook cater to connectivity. With seniors, staying in touch with family and friends has never been easier. There are a variety of different types of social networking tools out there, and although Facebook is the most popular, it isn’t the only tool that seniors use to stay connected. There are even senior-specific communities that allow people to connect with their peers so that they feel less alone at this stage in their lives.

Skype

Skype is one of the most popular video calling programs available. It is used by millions of people to stay in touch, including the 65+ audience. These users are typically connecting with their family members, making it easier to stay in touch and spend time together when distance is an issue. Many seniors enjoy being able to actually have a conversation with their loved ones instead of just talking on the phone, and the ease of using programs like Skype makes it something that everyone can enjoy.

Blogging

A lot of seniors are getting involved in the online world of blogging. This area is one that is growing quickly for all audiences, but a quick search will easily show the massive number of senior blogs and websites created specifically for those living in retirement. Not only does this offer a useful resource for older adults, but it allows them to stay connected and share their experiences with their peers. Even though only about 50% of those over the age of 65 actually use the internet on a regular basis, the audience is growing daily and blogging offers plenty of benefits for those who get involved.

The Future of Technology for Seniors

Considering that so many opportunities are available to utilize and enjoy technology in all of the stages of life, it just makes sense that people would take advantage of these tools. The biggest issue is proving to people that there are resources that they can benefit from. Once that bridge has been crossed, they are going to be much more likely to cash in on what’s available. With so many different forms of technology and ways to benefit from them, it just makes sense that people will take advantage of technology. Companies like Microsoft, Apple, Google, and others are working hard to create the best solutions for seniors so that they can utilize technology for entertainment, staying socially connected, and even daily living assistance tools and resources.

While the current market of technology isn’t as appreciated as it could be by the 65+ audience, there are plenty more people who are getting involved on a daily basis. It’s likely only a matter of time before everyone finds something that they can utilize when it comes to the high-tech tools available today.

“Needing Elder Care When Family is Missing.”~ A touching video and news story today via KPBS

KPBS has provided a touching video and a great news segment today on seniors “Needing Elder Care When Family is Missing.”

The sad reality is that there are many seniors who live alone and live below poverty level with no one to care for them. They have no spouse nor children who they can rely on for support in times of need or illness such as going to the doctor or providing for grocery needs.

There is a support group and a facility in San Diego called, “The Wellness Center,” which provides  this sense of community and support for the elder care.  As the baby boomers approach their retirement and senior age, the need for such a facility is becoming more apparent.  Aging alone is becoming a social trend as seniors who have no spouse nor children find the need of this kind of support group.  The creation of the  “Wellness Center” in San Diego is a great example of a senior network that provides this extended family atmosphere for many seniors and elderly living alone…

I hope, like many who are caring for their elderly parents, that such a public policy and more of this charitable organizations will come into fruition for the aging baby boomers in the immediate future…

Lesser-Known Supplements

Determining which supplements are best for your body and your circumstances can be difficult. Though many products claim to boost energy, control appetite, aid weight loss or support the immune system, several of the lesser-known products achieve the same results with more natural ingredients and fewer side effects.

If you’re on the search for amazing natural supplements, check out a few of the lesser-known options before purchasing the latest and trendiest capsules.

Colloidal Silver

Though somewhat controversial due to improper use, Colloidal Silver offers many health benefits when used correctly.

Having been in use since the 1920s, colloidal silver is most widely used today to fight fungal infections, disease, virus and bad bacteria all without affecting the good bacteria our bodies naturally house. It also boosts the immune system and can be preventative against common viruses like the common cold or the flu. Colloidal silver can also be used externally to treat skin conditions such as burns, tissue damage, rashes, acne and scarring.

Simply put, colloidal silver supplements are made of small silver particles within a liquid and contain the same type of metal as jewelry, dental fillings and silverware. Colloidal silver is typically packaged as an ingestible pill or in a liquid form, which can be injected or applied directly to the skin. It absorbs quickly whether used internally or externally, allowing the benefits to kick in sooner.

It should be used in moderation and not for extended periods of time. In rare cases, argyria can develop, giving the skin a blue or gray tone. Pregnant women should avoid taking colloidal silver, and it should never replace other medications as a “cure-all”.

Natural Energy with New Zealand Bee Pollen

Natural Energy with NZ Bee Pollen is an energy supplement produced by X-Tend Life. The supplement contains bee pollen from a remote chemical-free farm in New Zealand, and is flash frozen to preserve the natural benefits. The pollen is made into a powder form, combined with natural enzymes, nature’s best energy-boosting herbs, amino acids and minerals. The pollen and added natural ingredients are capsuled and packaged for sale.

Natural Energy with NZ Bee Pollen is a natural source of energy, appetite suppression, immune support and allergy treatment. Three to six pills should be taken daily, preferably on an empty stomach.

The supplement can be used as a healthier alternative to sugary, calorie-intensive or even ‘diet’ energy drinks and excessive caffeine intake.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids/Fish Oil

When used in proper dosage, omega-3 fatty acids, including fish oil supplements, are proven to raise levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which lower the risk of heart attack, arrhythmia, strokes, cardiovascular disease, slow build up of cholesterol in the arteries, lower blood pressure and relax stiff joints. However, increased dosage can cause excess bleeding and lowering of good cholesterol (LDL). Additionally, certain species of fish are commonly associated with mercury contamination and should be avoided.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and fish oil are best proven to treat high blood pressure, lower blood triglyceride levels and reduce the risk of heart disease or heart attacks. Though rumored to treat diabetes and transplant rejection, it has not been proven to do so effectively and should not be taken for these purposes.

Research

Always conduct proper research and speak with your doctor before beginning any new supplement. Though some supplements are beneficial for many people, others may have adverse reactions. Also be on the lookout for supplements that have an online coupon at your checkout that seems too good to be true. Chances are, it probably is. Stick to FDA approved supplements only and beware of any scams.
