Bystanders leave elderly hit-and-run victim on street

Reading this story and then seeing the video infuriated me, broke my heart and left me stunned and confused as to why everyday Americans did nothing to help a victim in need. Have we as America become so narcissistic and apathetic that nothing, not even young children or elderly people affect us the way they used to? The fact that no one came to this man’s aid, regardless of his age, shows me the callousness and the cowardice that exists and that is prevalent in today’s generation and culture.

Granted, I come from the so-called “slacker” generation known as Generation X. But there is no doubt, that I wouldn’t think twice about helping someone in need. In fact, just last Christmas holiday, my niece and I attended the 2007 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl game (College Football). When we were walking in the parking lot, on our way to the car, I heard this large THUMP! behind me. An elderly African American woman had just tripped on a pothole and landed face first onto the asphalt. My body reacted before it even registered in my head that she had fallen. I was already over there picking her up with another gentleman, asking her if she was ok. Thankfully, she was.

I just don’t know what to think anymore. Hearing stories like this almost everyday, makes me worry for my daughter’s generation. This should be a wake up call to our country that we seriously need a hard lesson on morality and ethics.
