~The Power Of Music Therapy on seniors with alzheimer’s, illness & disabilities~

~The Power Of Music Therapy on seniors with alzheimer’s, illness & disability~ by AlohaJosie

I know without a doubt that the therapeutic power of music, in addition to the alzheimer’s medicines, played a role in the prolonged life span of my beloved mom who recently passed away from dementia.

In addition, I also saw first hand the healing power of “Music Therapy” during the last 8 years of my belated mom’s alzheimer’s….
The “slow, quiet, and soothing sound” seems to help reduce the blood pressures and, in addition, is wonderful for those with breathing and lung problems like my dad who has both COPD (Congestive Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and CHF (Cardiac Heart Failure). The peaceful sound of music also brings calmness and seems to promote better health.

“Stimulative & fast beats” appeared to awaken, brighten, and made my mom more joyful inspite of her dementia. She also seemed to recognize her children much longer.  Music Therapy also creates a positive environment not only for the sick but also for us caregivers. Playing the “Music” that my mom & dad loved and remembered in their earlier years also assisted in calming and in creating a positive atmosphere preventing disruptive behaviors or agitation caused by dementia/alzheimer’s.

Here is a great article that I found by Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America through their research on the power of “Music Therapy.”

Group says “Stop selling high dose Aricept!”

A specific dose of Alzheimer’s drug should be pulled from the market because it poses a risk to patients, according to a consumer  group.

The drug, donepezil, sold under the brand Aricept, is administered in several doses – the highest being 23 milligrams – for patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease.

It is prescribed to improve mental function, such as memory, attention and reasoning by increasing a brain chemical. Aricept which is taken daily,  could slow the mental decline, but it does not cure or prevent Alzheimer’s.

The Public Citizen’s Health Research Group called the 23-milligram dose of Aricept “significantly more toxic” than the 10-milligram dose and said it  “should be immediately withdrawn from the market.”

Discovery doubles genetic clues to Alzheimer’s

Two new reports in Nature Genetics detail the discovery of five new pathways for detecting Alzheimer’s disease, the memory-stealing brain illness that is especially prevalent among the elderly. Previous research had identified five genes linked to Alzheimer’s disease, or AD. The combined efforts of an international consortium of researchers has raised those known genetic markers to 10. “We’ve really doubled the number of clues we have about late-onset AD. We have a lot left to do to complete the story of AD genetics, but this is a big step,” said Professor Gerard D. Schellenberg of the University of Pennsylvania, lead researcher for one of the studies.

“Almost as important as the genes discovered is the fact that a large number of investigators are working together to solve the genetics of AD,” Schellenberg said.
