“Family Day means being together and spending time as a Family”

Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children™ is a national movement launched by The Naitonal Center on Addiction Substance Abuse (CASA) in 2001 based on their research that has consistently found that the more often kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink, or use drugs.

First Lady Maria Shriver joined CASA in 2006 as California’s Honorary Chair and since has expanded the effort to become more than just a day by celebrating We Are Family! — encouraging families to spend time doing activities that strengthen the family unit – by eating, playing, serving and preparing together. California’s family day is also about celebrating the message that we are all a part of the California family!

Meals on Wheels Program in Trouble

I read some sobering news about the nutrition program Meals on Wheels, which I just wrote about in my previous article about home delivery meals. It looks like the high gas prices and high food costs have caused some branches of Meals on Wheels to lose some of its volunteer force, a critical component of the program as vulnerable seniors depend on these volunteers not only for the food but for emotional needs. These volunteers are sometimes the only contact to the outside world. For more information, see Economic-double whammy hits Meals-on-Wheels.
